Poppies are definitely my favorite flower. Last Spring I created my first crochet pattern, a red field poppy (you can get that free pattern HERE.) After almost a year of pattern making I decided to revamp my original poppy! I think this pattern looks even more realistic.
This pattern uses a combination of worsted and dk weight yarns. You can use almost any fiber type to create these poppies. I used acrylic yarn in my finished designs. Cotton yarns produce a more stiff petal. Wool creates a fuzziness that makes the stamen of the flower look a bit more realistic.

- They are worked flat.
When you finish rows 3-7 for the first time, your flower should look like this:
-
- Work rows 3-7 again in the remaining 6 stitches.
- Skip row 7 to make a smaller poppy.
for advanced crocheters – Instead of finishing off after each petal:
ch 2, sl st in the side of row 5, ch 2, sl st in the side of row 3, sl st into next open BLO of row 2

Assembly
Adding Embroidery & Fringe
Cut about 4 feet (1 meter) of worsted weight yellow yarn. Split the yarn right down the center.
Use some of this yarn to embroider 6 lines on the first row of the center of row 6 as shown below.
Cut the rest of the yarn into 12 even pieces. The longer these pieces are, the easier it will be to make the fringe on the flower.
Use your hook to knot each piece of yarn onto the FLO of each stitch in row 2 of layer 2 . Trim the fringe just a bit.
Putting It All Together
Stitch the center onto row 1 of layer 2 using the FLO of the row as guides.
Stitch Layer 2 on top of layer 1. Use the FLO of row 3 as guides.
